Career planningSetting clear expectations

Be clear on what’s expected of you

Be clear on what’s expected of you

When you meet your new leader on your first day, they’ll most likely provide you with about half of the information you’ll need to succeed. It’s not that they mean to leave anything out – they simply don’t remember what it is like to be starting a new job.

To help you gather the remaining information you need, follow these two steps:

1
Ask specific questions about what is expected of you within your first two weeks

  • What expectations do you have of me?
  • What should I aim to accomplish initially?
  • What should I achieve within my first 100 days?
  • How will my work be measured?

Ask clarifying questions if you are unsure of what has been said or to confirm your understanding.

    And what else?
After your conversation, follow up with an email. In your follow-up email, document the expectations discussed. Confirm that you're on the same page by asking if there's anything you might have missed.

Remember this golden rule: Don’t hesitate to ask plenty of questions.
