Is your workplace psychologically safe?

90% of Aussie employees believe working in mentally healthy workplaces is important. Is your team and workplace psychologically safe?

Trust and mutual respect are the bedrock foundations of psychological safety. In this environment, everyone feels comfortable being themselves, speaking up, and asking for help.

In recent years, there’s been a significant rise in mental health awareness and important steps have been taken. However, there is still more work to be done to create psychological safety in the workplace.

Dr. Amy Edmondson pioneered the concept of psychological safety and developed the questions below to help people examine their workplace.

Take a moment to answer the questions and see how your team measures up. As you do, think about whether you agree or disagree with each statement.

1
If you make a mistake, is it held against you?
2
Can people bring up problems and tough issues?
3
Do people accept others for being different?
4
Is it safe to take a risk on this team?
5
Is it difficult to ask others for help?
6
Would anyone deliberately act in a way that would undermine your efforts?
7
Are your unique skills and talents valued and utilised?

Based on your responses, identify one area where your team can improve. Building psychologically safe teams and workplaces requires time, effort, and accountability. Key enablers of this process include self-awareness, empathy, and accountability.
